November has begun reliably. Most of the trees here at Prospect Hill have colored and fallen, although the ancient Ginkgo’s are the grand finale. Slowly turning a butter yellow before falling to the ground. Collecting leaves is a long game, best done in fits and starts, and with great patience. Mother nature has a great sense of humor; even with the daily task of clearing the grounds, by the next morning it looks as if we haven’t done a thing! The upside is that we are collecting and shredding every scrap of leaf to make leaf mold for next year’s planting as part of our ongoing efforts to practice sustainable, organic gardening methods. Leaf mold creates a wonderful eco-friendly medium to retain moisture and feed the soil. November is bulb planting time! Call me crazy, but I’m excited to get my 8,000 spring bulbs in the ground now that the weather has cooled. There will be color and fragrance in the air from early spring onward!
This is our first fall and winter here at Prospect Hill and we’re looking forward to seeing how this charming old home and cottages take on a new look. There is a stark beauty to the tall trees and shrubs as the gardens drift off to sleep under the watchful guard off the 100+ year old boxwoods lining the driveway and decorating the grounds.
Speaking of decorating, Terenée (“T”) is finally fulfilling her lifelong dreams of creating a gingerbread village full of lights for the holidays. We’re already preparing for the holidays here, and she has big plans to make Prospect Hill “sparkle” by Thanksgiving. It’s going to look amazing! Whether you’re snuggled up under a blanket on the porch with a cup of our signature blend coffee or enjoying hot cocoa and cider sitting by the fire at our fire pit, you’ll have the opportunity to experience beauty of the grounds lighting up each evening at dusk! Trust me, you do not want to miss this!
Thanksgiving is coming quickly, and we’re gearing up to make sure our guests have a magical experience with us this year! We’re installing gas fireplaces in all the cottages by the end of the month. Boy’s, Uncle Guy’s House, and Uncle Guy’s Loft are already done! You’re going to love the ambiance and convenience the new gas inserts offer! We’re open for both Thanksgiving and Christmas with plans for a Thanksgiving feast for our friends, family, and guests staying with us over the holiday. We have a lot to be grateful for. The holidays are a perfect time to take a moment to reflect on the past year, to celebrate with loved ones, or just take a moment to recharge from daily life.
